[Bloomberg Reporter] The COVID-19 pandemic remains an unsolved mystery, and scientists believe that finding answers to this issue could help prevent future pandemics. Some have called for an international review on the origin of the virus, and in fact, the World Health Assembly held this month has agreed to initiate such an investigation. What is China's stance on this investigation? What objectives do you believe such an investigation should achieve? And what issues should it avoid?
【Li Keqiang】China and many other countries support the tracing of the virus origins. A resolution on this was adopted at the recent World Health Assembly, in which China also participated. Because a science-based study of the origins will help better prevent and control the epidemic and protect the life and health of people in all countries.
The outbreak of this epidemic came unexpectedly, presenting humanity with a completely new infectious disease. Even now, the unknown still outweighs the known. The virus knows no borders—it is an enemy to the entire world and all humankind. Countries are implementing prevention and control measures while advancing through exploration, as there is still no complete set of experience to rely on. On one hand, we must control the spread of the epidemic and accelerate the development of vaccines, effective medications, and testing kits, which will serve as powerful weapons for humanity to defeat this virus. Both China and many other countries are investing in these efforts, and we are willing to engage in international cooperation. These products are global public goods, and we are ready to share them to ultimately enable humankind to overcome this common enemy.
Through arduous and extraordinary efforts, the Chinese people have now effectively controlled the epidemic while actively participating in international cooperation. We have released relevant information to the international community in a timely, open, transparent, and responsible manner. However, the epidemic is still spreading globally, and it has not ended in China either, with sporadic cases continuing to emerge. Many scientists emphasize the need to remain vigilant and prevent a resurgence. We will continue to adhere to the principles of seeking truth from facts and maintaining openness and transparency. Once an outbreak is detected, we will firmly implement control measures, allowing no concealment whatsoever, and carry out scientific prevention and treatment.
Many now believe the epidemic may not end soon and could persist for some time. In reality, the international community is already facing a dual challenge and must deliver on two fronts: controlling the epidemic while also reviving economic and social development and restoring normal order. These objectives are in conflict, and addressing only one would make the situation different. We now need to strike a balance amid these contradictions and move forward through exploration, with international cooperation being especially crucial. Whether in combating the epidemic or reviving the economy, we must work together in solidarity to help humanity weather the impact of this enormous wave.
