"Jingpohu UNESCO Global Geopark" was successfully approved as a national natural resource science education base.
People's Daily Online, Harbin, February 29 (Liu Ting) - Recently, the evaluation results of the National Natural Resource Science Popularization Bases were announced, and the "Jingpohu Lake UNESCO Global Geopark" was successfully approved as a National Natural Resource Science Popularization Base.
Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark is located in Ning'an City, Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province. It is one of the first national key scenic spots and nature reserves, featuring volcanic geological landforms and water landscapes, integrated with natural scenery such as forests and wetlands, as well as cultural heritage sites. "The main functions of Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark are to protect geological relics and the natural environment, popularize geoscience knowledge, enhance public scientific literacy, develop tourism activities, and promote sustainable local economic and social development," said Tong Zhiqiang, deputy chief engineer of Mudanjiang Center.
It is reported that during the application process for the science education base, the Mudanjiang Natural Resources Comprehensive Survey Center of the China Geological Survey (hereinafter referred to as "Mudanjiang Center") played an active role. Leveraging the multi-element urban geological survey project in Mudanjiang City, it conducted comprehensive publicity for the Jingpohu Lake UNESCO Global Geopark from perspectives such as myths and legends, cultural and historical heritage, geological background and evolution, and basalt plateaus. The center published a popular science article titled "Exploring China's Largest Alpine Barrier Lake," produced a science video on "The Formation and Evolution of Jingpohu," and participated in drafting the "Application for the Science Education Base," effectively contributing to the bid for the "Jingpohu Lake UNESCO Global Geopark" as a national natural resources science education base.
The Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark has been approved as a National Natural Resources Science Popularization Base, which will strongly support national natural resources science communication and the development of Mudanjiang City as a distinctive tourism hub. "Next, the Mudanjiang Center will focus on the construction needs of the park's unique natural resources science base, leverage its disciplinary and technological strengths, and comprehensively support the base's development and local progress through improving science facilities, planning science activities, and training science personnel," said Zhao Yuandong, Chief Engineer of the Mudanjiang Center.
