Recently, the evaluation results for the National Natural Resource Science Popularization Bases were announced, and the Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark was successfully approved as a National Natural Resource Science Popularization Base.

The Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark is located in Ning'an City, Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, and is one of China's first key national scenic and natural reserve areas. It features volcanic geological landforms and water landscapes as its main attractions, integrating natural scenery such as forests and wetlands with cultural sites like historical relics. "The primary functions of the Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark include protecting geological heritage, conserving the natural environment, promoting earth science education, enhancing public scientific literacy, facilitating tourism activities, and fostering sustainable local economic and social development," said Tong Zhiqiang, Deputy Chief Engineer of the Mudanjiang Natural Resources Comprehensive Survey Center under the China Geological Survey (hereinafter referred to as the "Mudanjiang Center").

Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark

It is reported that during the application process for the science popularization base, the Mudanjiang Center played an active role. Leveraging the multi-element urban geological survey project of Mudanjiang City it undertook, the center conducted comprehensive promotion of the Jingpohu Lake UNESCO Global Geopark from perspectives such as myths and legends, cultural and historical heritage, geological background and evolutionary causes, and basalt plateaus. It published the popular science article "Exploring China's Largest Alpine Barrier Lake," produced the science video "The Formation and Evolution of Jingpohu," and participated in drafting the "Application for Science Popularization Base," effectively contributing to the application of Jingpohu Lake UNESCO Global Geopark as a national natural resource science popularization base.

Jingpohu Lake Global Geopark was approved as a National Natural Resources Science Popularization Base, which will strongly support national natural resources science communication and the construction of Mudanjiang's characteristic tourism city. "Next, the Mudanjiang Center will focus on the needs of building a distinctive natural resources science popularization base in the park, leverage its disciplinary and technological advantages, and support the base's development and local progress through improving science facilities, planning science activities, and training science personnel," said Zhao Yuandong, Chief Engineer of the Mudanjiang Center.
