A millennium-old fishing tradition embraces new vitality as fish leap from icy waters celebrating bounty. The 11th China·Jingpohu Lake Winter Fishing Festival will grandly commence on January 15 at the Millennial Grand Winter Fishing themed area of the resort pier in Jingpohu Lake Scenic Area, simultaneously launching the First Jingpohu Lake Winter Ice Fishing Challenge of Ice Super·Mudanjiang. A spectacular winter event blending cultural experiences, ecological sightseeing, and sports competitions is set to unfold.
As the world's largest volcanic barrier lake, Jingpohu Lake boasts a fishing culture traceable to the Bohai Kingdom era of the Tang Dynasty. The Winter Fishing Festival, a nationally exemplary fishery cultural celebration, once set an astounding record with a single net haul of 860,000 jin (430 metric tons). Leveraging ice and snow as its medium and culture as its soul, Jingpohu Lake is fully committed to establishing itself as a benchmark destination for winter tourism, injecting fresh momentum into the high-quality development of Mudanjiang's ice and snow economy.
On the day of the event, the millennia-old "Lake Worship and Net Awakening" ceremony will solemnly commence. Fishermen will chant powerful work songs as they jointly turn the winch to pull out the massive kilometer-long net, causing fish to leap from the icy surface and recreating the spectacular scene of "Fish Leaping on the Frozen Lake." Folk performances such as the Shengshi Drum, Winter Fishing Songs, and Northeast Yangko Dance will take turns entertaining visitors, immersing them in the charm of ancient fishing and hunting culture. Simultaneously, the Winter Ice Fishing Challenge will gather 40 domestic fishing enthusiasts, who will compete inside tents on the ice, showcasing their angling skills and endurance while embodying the sportsmanship spirit of "making friends through fishing and challenging oneself."
Additionally, the scenic area has introduced over ten ice and snow entertainment activities, including off-road snow driving, visiting the Diaoshuilou Ice Falls for photo opportunities, and cultural tourism experiences at Ningguta. The Haidong Prosperity-themed snow sculpture clusters, ice sculpture photo spots, and ice performances allow visitors to enjoy the ice and snow while appreciating the historical legacy of the Bohai Kingdom and Ningguta. This year's Winter Fishing Festival will continue until mid-to-late February, featuring daily winter fishing and small net fishing demonstrations.
