Nation's First "Lunar-like Underground Space" Teaching and Training Base Established at Jingpo Lake

On June 25, the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee and the School of Earth and Space Sciences at Peking University jointly held a plaque-unveiling ceremony for the "Jingpohu Lake Teaching and Training Base of Peking University’s School of Earth and Space Sciences" at Shibao Park, Jingpohu. Li Dongjun, Director of the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee, and Li Jiaqi, Researcher at Peking University’s School of Earth and Space Sciences, unveiled the plaque for the base. This marks the nation's first "lunar-like underground space" teaching and training base, which will serve lunar exploration projects and cultivate young talent.

Peking University, in collaboration with seven other institutions including Zhejiang University, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Sun Yat-sen University, innovatively selected the underground lava tunnels at Jingpohu Lake to simulate lunar subsurface conditions, establishing the "lunar-like underground space" teaching and training base. Scientists have deployed cutting-edge equipment such as nodal seismometers, distributed fiber-optic seismic monitoring systems, and flexible-arm exploration robots at the base, creating a three-dimensional detection system. This facilitates a series of forward-looking, innovative research closely related to deep-space exploration, supports China’s lunar exploration program, and nurtures the next generation of planetary science talent with global perspectives. The "lunar-like underground space" base is not only a hub for scientific research but also a platform for science education. The Jingpohu Lake Management Committee is fully committed to supporting research efforts and leveraging the base’s establishment to deepen the integration of "tourism + research + education." By interpreting Jingpohu’s volcanic stories from a geological perspective and harnessing Peking University’s expertise to advance science education, the aim is to transform Jingpohu Lake into not just a tourist destination but also a hub for scientific practice and a cradle for talent development.
