The 2022 China Jingpohu Lake Open Water Swimming Challenge will officially commence on the morning of December 18 at Jingpohu.
Open water swimming refers to competitions held in natural bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, and seas. Events with distances not exceeding 10 kilometers are classified as long-distance swimming competitions, while those exceeding 10 kilometers are called marathon swimming competitions. The Jingpohu Lake Scenic Area is hosting this event to implement the "National Fitness Regulations," promote the national fitness plan, develop the sports and tourism industries, expand the supply of sports + tourism markets, and meet the growing demand for sports tourism among the general public.
Jingpohu Lake is located in the southeastern part of Heilongjiang Province, bordering Russia to the east, Changbai Mountain to the south, Mudanjiang City to the north, and connecting to Snow Town, Yabuli, and Harbin City to the west. In 1982, it became one of the first national key scenic spots. In 2006, it was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark. In 2008, it was rated as one of China's top ten leisure and tourist destinations by the International Leisure Industry Association, the United Nations International Ecological Safety Cooperation Organization, and the China International Brand Association. In 2010, it became a national 5A-level scenic area. In 2021, with a brand value of 6.164 billion yuan, it ranked first among provincial tourist destinations for the second consecutive year. The famous attraction, Diaoshuilou Waterfall—Black Dragon Pool, has a depth of 32 meters with a winter water temperature of 8°C, making it ideal for water sports even in extreme cold. The Open Water Swimming Challenge is also the first event held at Jingpohu Lake after its selection as a national sports tourism demonstration base.
This winter, Jingpohu Lake will host a series of sports tourism activities: the Heilongjiang Province Cold-Water Fish Winter Fishing Season and Jingpohu Lake Winter Fishing Ceremony on December 27, the New Year Climbing Fitness Event, Ice Car Rally, and Ice Marathon on January 1, 2023, as well as activities such as ice football, ice dragon boating, ice fishing, ice diving, and small-net fishing. To support these events, the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee has introduced corresponding ticket packages and public benefit policies to attract more tourists to step outdoors, embrace nature, and participate in outdoor activities at Jingpohu.
