Jingguanwei Delegation Attends the 8th IUCN World Conservation Congress in the United Arab Emirates

Under the organization of the Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China and the China Association of National Parks and Scenic Sites, and upon the invitation of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (a unified delegation included representatives from Jingpohu, Mount Emei, and Mount Huashan scenic areas, while other attendees from World Conservation Green List sites such as Changbai Mountain, Huanglong, and Yancheng traveled independently), Comrade Li Dongjun, Director of the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee, and Comrade Zhang Shixiang, Director of the Office of the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee, attended the 8th World Conservation Congress held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, from October 8 to October 12, 2025, with a stay of five days abroad.

This event, organized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and held every four years, stands as one of the most significant global gatherings focused on nature conservation. Under the theme "Driving Transformative Conservation Action," this year's congress brought together over 10,000 participants from more than 160 countries, including decision-makers from governments, civil society, indigenous organizations, academia, and businesses, to jointly advance and set the conservation and sustainable development agenda for the coming decades.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world's largest and oldest global non-profit environmental organization, as well as an international body with permanent observer status at the United Nations General Assembly in the fields of nature conservation and sustainable development. It boasts over 200 state and governmental agency members from 161 countries, alongside more than 1,000 non-governmental organization members. In 1996, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, representing the Chinese government, joined IUCN, making China a state member. The IUCN China Liaison Office was established in 2003, and the IUCN China Representative Office was officially set up in 2012. Currently, IUCN has over 30 member organizations in China. IUCN supports its members and partners through information sharing, international exchanges, capacity building, and local demonstration projects, providing technical assistance such as policy and regulatory support for China's collaboration with the international community on critical environmental issues.

Currently, China has 25 natural protected areas, including the Zhangjiajie Giant Salamander National Nature Reserve, Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve, Huanglong, and Xinjiang World Natural Heritage Sites, listed in the IUCN Green List. Being included in the list has profound impacts on enhancing international recognition, better protecting environmental resources, and promoting the healthy and sustainable development of local economies. Several national scenic areas invited by the National Land Consolidation Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the National Association of Scenic Areas are representative of different regions and meet the conditions for applying for the Green List, which is one of the main reasons for this visit by the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee. Based on the above factors and the gains from participating in this conference, our next step is to closely collaborate and communicate with the Ministry of Natural Resources, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, and the National Association of Scenic Areas to secure support and prepare for the application process of Jingpohu Lake for the "Green List." This initiative will be incorporated into the important work agenda of the Jingpohu Lake Management Committee in the coming period.
