Leiqiong Global Geopark

Located on both sides of Qiongzhou Strait at southernmost China, Leiqiong Global Geopark covers a total area of 3,050 square kilometers, consisting of Haikou Park in Hainan Province and Zhanjiang Park in Guangdong Province. The park has dense volcanic clusters with 101 volcanoes in total. These volcanoes nearly cover all types of basaltic magma eruptions and phreatomagmatic eruptions: lava cones, pyroclastic cones, composite cones, and maars. With such large quantity, diverse types and well-preserved status, it ranks first among Quaternary volcanic belts in China, serving as a natural textbook of Quaternary basalt volcanology.

Both parks feature maar volcanoes formed by steam-magma eruptions resulting from the interaction between hot magma and cold water. Typical maar volcanoes include Huguangyan, Tianyang, and Qingtongyang in the Zhanjiang area, as well as Shuangchiling and Yanghualing in the Haikou area. Many of their iconic geological structures are highly representative in earth science. The Huguangyan Maar Lake serves as the birthplace of maar lake research in China and is a collaborative research base for Chinese and German scientists. The park's locations, Haikou City and Zhanjiang City, are both nationally recognized historical and cultural cities. The harmonious coexistence of human activities with volcanic (basaltic) landscapes has created a unique and profound volcanic cultural heritage within the park.
