Meeting details:

The China (Yandang Mountain) Volcanic Rocks and Volcanic Geopark Forum was held at the Yandang Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark from November 17 to 20, 2020. The forum was co-organized by the Magmatic Petrology Committee of the Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry and the State Key Laboratory for Mineral Deposits Research at Nanjing University, and hosted by the Yandang Mountain UNESCO Global Geopark. Over 60 participants from 26 institutions attended the event, including representatives from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chang'an University, Capital Normal University, Nanjing Geological Survey Center of China Geological Survey, Wuhan Geological Survey Center, and several volcanic UNESCO Global Geoparks in China. Researcher Wu Fuyuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, provided guidance at the forum. Representatives from the University of Tokyo in Japan and the University of the Azores in Portugal participated via online video conference.

The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Mr. Huang Shengliang, Deputy Director of the Yandang Mountain Scenic Tourism Management Committee. Mr. Huang Jing, Member of the Standing Committee of the Yueqing Municipal Party Committee and Director of the Yandang Mountain Scenic Tourism Management Committee, and Professor Xu Xisheng, Director of the State Key Laboratory for Mineral Deposits Research at Nanjing University, delivered speeches on behalf of the organizers and co-organizers respectively. Researcher Jin Xiaochi, Vice Chairman of the Executive Bureau of the Global Geoparks Network, attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

The forum primarily focused on cutting-edge scientific topics such as the genetic connections between volcanic and intrusive rocks, as well as the conservation and sustainable development of volcanic geoparks. Professor Xu Xisheng and 18 other experts and scholars delivered oral presentations, exchanging insights on the magmatic evolution characteristics, regional comparisons, petrogenesis, formation conditions, magmatic processes, crust-mantle interactions, tectonic settings, and mineralization of large-scale volcanic activities along the southeastern coast of China. Discussions also covered the volcanic geology, landscapes, and management of major volcanic geoparks in China, with attendees engaging in lively debates on topics of interest. Following the academic sessions, the experts conducted field investigations in areas such as Lingfeng, Fangdong, Changyu Dongtian, and Nanxi River within the Yandangshan UNESCO Global Geopark. They held on-site discussions on the volcanic structures, lithofacies, tectonics, and the formation mechanisms of volcanic landforms in Yandangshan.
